By early August 2006 ITAB’s Series 537GF was being used as a back-up aircraft for CAA’s flights between Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. Unfortunately it was grounded in March 2007 but returned to service at the end of December. Bad luck struck again when the aircraft suffered engine problems in Mbuji-Mayi in March 2008. As a result it was decided to permanently withdraw the aircraft from service in September 2008.

MALAWI
Air Malawi, Ltd. - (QM/AML)
Blantyre
Air Malawi leased a Series 207AJ from Zambia Airways with effect from early November 1970 pending delivery of a new Series 481FW. This aircraft operated in a 16 first class, 46 economy seats configuration. The new aircraft was delivered in February 1972 in a 74 seat single class configuration. The fleet was doubled with the addition of a Series 479FU leased from Air Pacific in early July 1974. This was returned in November 1975. Two aircraft were later leased from BCAL, a Series 501EX for three weeks in November and December 1977 and a Series 530FX from October 1979 to April 1980. In late October 1980 a Series 524FF was bought from Hapag-Lloyd. The aircraft were employed on scheduled flights from Lilongwe and Blantyre to Antananarivo, Beira, Dar-es-Salaam, Gaborone, Harare, Johannesburg, Lusaka, Mauritius, Nairobi and the Seychelles (with effect from 7th December 1972) and on charter flights including the ‘Wenelas’ South African Mines Labour flights. By 1st April 1988 the aircraft were operating a once weekly schedule for Air Botswana between Gabarone and Nairobi via Harare. The aircraft were withdrawn in June 1991 and disposed of in June 1991 and March 1993.

Bamako
The organisation obtained a Stage 3 hush-kitted Series 401AK in April 2007 to be initially operated on behalf of the Mali Government. The aircraft was fitted out in an executive configuration and was flown throughout Africa and Europe. It was initially maintained by Jet Technics at Băneasa, Romania. A second 1-11 joined the fleet by June 2008 this being a Series 492GM. A third aircraft, a Series 488GH, was added to the fleet in June 2009. The aircraft were based at Bamako and Tripoli-Mitiga and were operated on VIP charter work throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Due to certification issues with the two 475s and their Stage 3 hush-kits and the Libyan crisis during 2011 it is believed that only the series 401AK could still be operational from its base in Bamako. Heavy maintenance has been carried out by Romaero, who originally built the nine ROMBAC 1-11s, at their Baneasa base.
